Here are some more of my tips to start collecting for FUN & $$$. This is a hobby that is rewarding in fun and a few extra dollars. Have a great day.
YARD SALE GUIDELINES
Get the local paper of the Thursday & Friday issues, then check out the classified ads under Garage Sales. Do a quick scan for locations closest to your home. Next look over ads that mentions items that match your interest.
Realize odds are upscale neighborhoods have the finer items you are seeking.
High light any ads that catch your attention, then go over the ads again to check dates and times of the sales.
Next select the places you want tot shop. Try to set up a route that saves gas and time for your shopping.
When the ads says NO EARLY BIRDS do NOT show up before the start of the sale!! If you are especially interested in items listed in the ad try to get to that sale early, this increases your chance of getting those items. Later in the day prices generally drop as the hours go by. In some cases at the end of the sale time folks will just want items hauled away.
Prices are generally very reasonable at garage & yard sales. Churches & non-profits that hold rummage sales are places to pick up items at a very cheap price3. Normally no discount is offered for the profits are used for a charitable project. Be EARLY at these sales for the high quality items are gone very quickly.
Lately whole neighborhoods and small towns are having 1 day yard sales. The big advantages are parking your car in one place, and just walk over the area of the sale. This saves time & gas of going from place to place. You will see a lot of items in a relatively short time. On such an outing take water or drinks, snacks and comfortable walking shoes.
Take a small pull cart to assist in carrying all the good buys that you get as you shop. I did very well on such a neighborhood sale. The people are normally willing to deal on the prices of the items. These sales do take a lot of time to cover all the streets. Plan on a break for lunch or snacks, to keep your energy level up.
I started collecting in August of 2006 as way to pass time and add a couple bucks in my pocket. I have been doing this on a shoestring type budget, so had to find ways to get good deals for my items. I did get some very sound advice as I started on this new hobby.
Two main points about COLLECTING in general, 1st: Figure out what type of field you are really interested in to collect. Realize that some items do require lots of space for storage or displaying. Items such as costume jewelry need a lot less space for a collection. Once you have figured out what field you want to collect hit you local library. Check out books, cd’s or tapes dealing with collecting in those fields. That will give you some basics as what to look for when out buying that type of collectible.
2nd: Anyone from teenager to retired seniors can enjoy and profit from this hobby. It will require YOU to spend TIME reading up and actually getting out there, buying items for YOUR collection. It does take some planning on where to go to looking for items you want to collect. I will tell you right up front COLLECTING CAN BECOME ALMOST AN ADICTIVE HOBBY! The quest of finding that special coin or golden nugget of an item make folks endure coldest of winter days. Just be aware some days it seems each stop holds a find, other days everything comes up blanks.
It is much EASIER to AQUIRE items for your collection than it is to sell those items to pay for your hobby. Younger people that are use to the Internet e-bay type auctions may work out o.k. If you live in a small town far away from a large city e-bay type auctions is a valid option. Normally the rest of use e-bay etc. for selling un-needed items we want out of the house.
I will be updating this page with more tips on COLLLECTING in the weeks ahead. Topics I intend to cover in more detail include: where to shop, Flea Markets, Estate Sales (tag sales) and live Auctions. Different options for selling items to cover expenses and maybe even make a few bucks. Any comments about this article or future articles e-mail me.
Have a great day of hunting for YOUR treasures.
