2011 Catfishing ACTION!

MY 28 pound BLUECAT Nov.5th. 2007 and a 26 pound blue cat on the bottom of the boat !!

Here is the information of the trips of this 2011 CATFISHING season.

UPDATE Nov 8th. 08:15 paid my $4 parking fee at the public landing and got my boat in the river. 1st stop was up river just below Joe’s Crab Shack on the Ky. side. I had a couple of taps on seasoned chicken breast nothing on the thawed skipjacks. 2nd. spot was just above Joe’s with the same results; taps but no strong bites.
I lifted the anchor since there was decent current tried drift fishing. No action that way either. Anchored the boat just above Hooters, my favorite spot at 10:05. I hooked a small 16 inch 1pound 6 oz. channel cat at 10:10. This fish hit a strip of seasoned beef. 10:35 hooked into a little bigger fish also on the beef strip. This channel cat came in at 22.5 inches 4.5 pounds.
11:15 headed back to the ramp for the 9.9 motor started acting up again. This has really been my worst year of fishing from my boat. I believe this will be my LAST trip of the year.

UPDATES Oct 11th.: I put my boat in the river around 09:40. I had my 3 rods in the water at Hooters at 09:50. I stayed there for around 2 hours, had 1 bite. It was a hard run, suspected it to be a Garr.
I moved the boat down river to the Ky. pier of the L&N Bridge. I got 2 taps on season chicken breast and that was all. I headed back to the ramp and home at 12:30, at least got a few taps this trip.

UPDATE Oct 6th. I put in at Fredrick’s and went down the Licking River to the Ohio river. Then set up at the Mill Creek area. It was a bright sunny day no wind but very strong current and lots of drift. I put out my 3rods; fresh & thawed skipjack and chicken breast for bait. 50 mins. later mover down river about a mile. I went there to get out of the fast current. Stayed there for about 45mins and gave up for I never got a bite at all. Headed back up river and just around the mouth of the Licking River my motor just cut back to idle speed. I could not get it to go any faster; so headed right for the ramp. It took a long time to nurse it back; but at least I never had to row at all. These were two frustrating trips. I hope to get back on the Ohio soon; to get some of the action the other folks have been having the past 2 weeks.

I have published an E-book with tips and information to help YOU catch more catfish on your furture trips. Just CLICK on the photo and it will connect you to the Amazon book store! So check it out, it cost less than a dozen night crawlers at the bait shop.

UPDATES: Oct 4th. I put my boat in at The Licking River around 09:00 I went up river ; I marked fish at 4 different places. I put out my 3 rods at each spot. I had fresh shad thawed skipjacks and chicken breast. I never got a tap so called it a day at 11:00

Sept 12th. Update: After a delay of a few hours I finally got my lines in the Ohio River at 09:45. I had 3 rods out at the down river side of the out flow by Joe’s Crab Shack. There was some current in the river a light breeze blowing up river. I hooked a small 18 inch Channel cat at 10:10. This fish hit a small thawed skipjack it was only 2.5 pounds. 10:35 I moved down to Hooters. I had 1 tap on seasoned chicken breast.

11:10 I moved the boat closer to Hooters. 11:40 boated another Channel cat 18 inches but was 2.5 pounds as well. This guy liked the seasoned chicken breast. I had one other good bite on that bait but missed it.
I called it a day at 12:30 for the long slow trip back to Fredrick’s Landing on the Licking River.

Aug 24th. UPDATE: No shad at the Public Landing ramp again. We headed down river and started fishing at 08:40. The wind was blowing upriver bouncing the boat a good deal. I was not going to stand up to fight a fish with boat bouncing that hard. We did have some hard taps; suspect they were Garr or Strippers instead of catfish. Stayed there till around 10:15 then gave up and headed back up river.
10:45 had our lines in the water by Hooters, at least the wind was not bad there. We had a couple of taps but not hard bites. The heat was really getting to us; since no real action called it a day at 11:30 and headed home.
Not sure when we will get back on the river for next weekend is the big fireworks show. I am sure the Public Landing will be shutting down from Thursday until after the big event.

Aug 19th. UPDATE: Aug 19th. Joe & I left the Public Landing at 08:00 headed down river. We got our poles in the water at 8:20. It was our best day this season. We came up with Joe catching 4 nice channel cats. His smallest was 4 pounds and big fish of the day; that was a 10 pounds.
I caught 2 channel cats and 2 baby 11 inch BLUECATS. My biggest was 9 pounds 28 inches. All the fish were caught on raw or seasoned chicken breast. ALL the fish were released to fight another day.
I did not net any shad at the ramp again.
So it looks like the cats are finally feeding and giving us some fun. Looking forward to wetting our lines again next week.

Here is a photo of the 9 pound Channel cat from the aug.19th trip.

MY 9 pound CHANNEL CAT Aug 19th. 2011!

Aug 15th. UPDATE: I started casting for Shad at the Public Landing ramp at 07:45 this morning. I came up empty after a number of throws. Joe & I got the boat to our first spot; the inside breaker by the Serpentine Wall at 08:10. No bites so headed off; settled in at the 3rd. pier out from Ky. of the purple bridge at 08:50. Once again no bites so headed for HOOTERS.
Had a little problem getting the boat set with the wind blowing. 10:00 I had a hard bite pulled back had it for a few seconds, felt like a nice fish. When I got my line in found out my knot came undone at the hook. Then at 10:20 my bobber went under and the reel start screaming, this time my knot was tied right. The blue cat was finally netted and in the boat. This fish was 14 pound and 32 inches. The bait was a chunk of season chicken breast.
Joe had a fish on that broke his line at 11:00 that hit chicken breast. 11:05 Joe hooked a decent channel cat and got it in the boat. This cat was 20 inches and 3 pounds. Chicken breast was also the bait on that hook. I did have a couple of bites on the mushy goldeye but the fish was able to rip it off the hook.
No more bites after 11:20 so we packed it in at 12:15. It was good to boat a couple of fish and get a number of decent bites for a change. Maybe with cooler temperatures the fish will start feeding at long last.

Here is a photo of the 14 pound bluecat from this trip.

July 21 st. UPDATE: I netted 2 gizzard shad at the ramp. We started fishing by the Ky. pier of the Central Bridge at 07:15. No bites so moved down river to the Ky. piers of the CWB Bridge in Covington, saw fish but no bites. Came back up river to the Newport side of the Licking River for about 30 minutes. Next stop was up to the L & N Bridge, same story no action. Last spot for the day was above Hooters, just not luck there either. It was getting very hot so we called it a day and headed for the ramp at 10:45. This was my youngest grandson’s 1st trip in Grandpa’s boat so it was a great day for the both of us anyway.

July 14th. & 15 Update; I had just a few bites over the 2 trips. I did boat this nice blue cat. For all the details and photos of the 2 trips hit. 2 TRIPS 1 BIG BLUECAT.

July 6th. No shad at the Public landing this morning. I got my boat in the river at 07:05 Turned the fish finder on as I went past the Serpentine Wall not many fish there. I got my lines in the water at HOOTERS at 07:20 Had a clicker go off but the fish did not come back to the bait. 08:20 I went up river along the Ky. side. No bites there so headed over to the Ohio side and the shade of the Big Mac Bridge. Same story no bites so back to Hooters.
09:35 the clicker sounded off again on the bobber rig. Fish dropped it; suspect those bites were garrs. At 10:00 the bobber went under and stayed under, I pulled back and had a nice fish at the other end. The channel cat was 24 inched and 6.5 pound when I measured it out. That fish took a piece of seasoned chicken breast. That was all the action for the day. I headed back to the ramp at 10:30,for it was just too hot.

MY 15 pound 30.5 inch BLUECAT june 28 2011!

June 28th UPDATE: We got the boat in the water at 09:00. Put our lines in the river by the Ky. Piers of the Central Bridge at 09:05. Strong current there, saw fish with fish finder but NO bites. Then we headed up Hooters; our favorite spot at 09:35. My rod got hammered at 09:55, hooked into a nice fish. After a long hard battle, boat the Bluecat. It was 34 inches long and the digital scale said 18 pounds, but it felt heavier than that to me. This fish hit a chunk of thawed skipjackand I mean HIT. Miss being a Ky. Trophy fish by 1 inch.
Then at 10:40 my bobber vanished and the rod went down, this was another nice blue. When boated measured out a little smaller. It was 30.5 inches and only 15 pounds. When the measuring & photo taken was complete this fish was also returned to river to grow bigger and fight another day.
These were the ONLY bites of the day; Joe never even got a tap. We called it a day and headed back to the Public Landing at 12:30.

June 17th Update: Took my grandson from California fishing on the Ohio River. We got on the water at 11:20, set up under the Ky. piers of the Central Bridge. Spotted some fish but never got a tap. Next stop was above Hooters at Newport. At 12:05 a channel cat hit the cut skipjack hard. I gave the rod over to my grandson; it was bigger than the bluegills he caught in the past. He gave the rod back to me for he was unable to handle the rod as he expected. I must say that cat put up a very strong fight for its size. My grandson did work the dip net just fine! The cat was 19 inches, 4pounds. It was getting very windy and hotter than my grandson was used to; so we called it a day and headed home around 13:30.
It was just a good time to spend time together and boating the catfish was just icing on the cake.

June 7th 2011 UPDATE First trip of this season got the boat in the water at 08:05 at the Cincinnati Public Landing. Set up at the Ky. pier of the L&N Bridge at 08:10. The current was much stronger than we expected. We only stayed there for about 20 mins. We then headed up river to Hooters, tried there for around 30mins, no bites. Next stop was on the Ky. side straight out from the Chart House. Joe hooked a 4 pound 21.5 inch channel cat on chicken breast. That happened about 5mins. after we anchored, then he got another tap but that was it. Last stop of the day was back at Hooters I got a tap on seasoned chicken breast and that was it. I had tried cut skipjack, Shad & minnows but nothing touched them! Got back to ramp and headed home at 12 noon. The little breeze did take some of the heat away but it was still very warm out on the river. At least we were not skunked on the trip.

Here are photos of the action from the Summerof 2008. Hopefully will have more such shots and videos this season.
